Communication Lesson
During our non-technical training with SRKay CG, we played a game called Chinese Whisper. Our mentors then were Sandeep and Anuj with Sharmilee joining in later.

A piece of paper was given to us by Anuj, with four sentences written on it. Three sentences were about different people and the things they had, while the fourth sentence was “I have a laptop”. The whisper started from one person and went round in a group of fifteen people.

The first three sentences underwent changes of names and the things they had, however the last one remained intact as it contained ‘I’. This was a very important communication lesson brought to us stating how important it is to know the perspective of other people, and not just paying attention to ‘l’.
Growing as leader
This story is regarding my learning about leadership while working in SRKay Consulting group. I joined the company in June 2016 and the new batch enrolled in June 2017. At the time I was part of the automation team. After training for about a month the new batch was dispersed in different teams overlooking different projects.

There were four girls who were placed in the automation team who seemed to have doubts about working in QA and wanted to be a part of back-end/front-end development. This made it important for our team to generate interest and enthusiasm about QA work and guide them towards our goals of completion.

I achieved this by highlighting the advantages of QA clarifying that QA is no less than development and would help in learning the entire application’s requirements and how it works using business cases. We generated interest and curiosity in them regarding how we work along, what we do, our responsibilities with our development cycle, git, CI/CD etc.

This was a small achievement for us. With their growing knowledge and skillset they finally moved to the backend development team, providing appreciable feedback of enjoying the experience of working with the QA team. What I learned from this experience is that it is definitely important to be firm about deadlines and quality of product, but what is the most important is how as a leader you generate that enjoyable experience among your team members thus pushing them to work harder and complete deadlines.

This experience of being a part of teaching the new batch helped considerably in my personal growth of skillset as a QA developer and also as a growing leader.

Even though this team has moved on towards being backend developers working on different projects, they still show consistent interest in several improving modules and R&D carried out by me and my team.

Think before you code (Be a developer not a coder)
At the time of our technical training and the first modules we had as a developer, I was a part of the backend development working with Java and later in node JS. We learned several things from Sujit but most importantly about how to think as a developer, highlighting the difference between a developer and a simple coder.

Some of the things taught to us were that codes are easily available on the internet, and how we should be able to make a Layman person understand what we have done. While working on a project I also learned the importance of code quality and documentation in order to sustain with the continuous changes in requirements.
